Then there are all the gray areas of punctuation—situations the rule books gloss over or never mention at all. At last, help has arrived.

Better yet, this is the only guide that uses handy icons to show how punctuation rules differ for book, news, academic, and science styles—so you can boldly switch between essays, online newsletters, reports, fiction, and magazine and news articles.

Style guides don’t cover everything, but never fear! This handbook features rulings from an expert “Punctuation Panel” so you can see how working pros approach sticky situations. And the second half of the book features an alphabetical master list of commonly punctuated terms worth its weight in gold, combining rulings from the major style guides and showing exactly where they differ. With

Review
“Ridiculously useful. The best book on punctuation I’ve ever seen.”
—Mignon Fogarty, author of Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing

“Invaluable reference work for professional proofreaders, editors, and writers because it is the only book that presents Chicago, AP, APA, and MLA conventions side by side. (Acronym-free translation: for each use of each punctuation mark, this book clearly explains and illustrates the practices used by book publishers, the news media, social science publications, and nonscientific academic papers and journal articles.)”
—Amy Einsohn, author of The Copyeditor’s Handbook

Introduction: Punctuation Is Easy, Except When It’s Not
Punctuate this:
In general the writer who did well in college earning As and Bs knows that a young aspiring middle grade novelist has an equally good reason to join the writers group because what it is is a line up of super creative people who for conscience sake treat it like a sub group of their audience to gauge the readers sensibilities and practice copy editing something they started in the 1960s and 70s because it was in the founders words far out

Did you put a comma after in general? Did you put commas after writer, college, Bs, and group? Did you put apostrophes in A’s, B’s, writers’, conscience’, readers’, ’70s, and founder’s? Did you put hyphens in middle-grade, super-creative, and sub-group? Did you put a dash before something? Did you put quotation marks around far out but insert a period between the word out and the closing quotation mark?

If so, your passage probably looks a lot like this:
In general, the writer, who did well in college, earning A’s and B’s, knows that a young aspiring middle-grade novelist has an equally good reason to join the writers’ group, because what it is is a line up of super-creative people who for conscience’ sake treat it like a sub-group of their audience to gauge the readers’ sensibilities and practice copy editing—something they started
in the 1960s and ’70s because it was, in the founder’s words,
“far out.”

And you might think your polished, carefully punctuated passage is perfect. But you’d be wrong.
The Los Angeles Times would disagree with your apostrophes in A’s and B’s. Per that newspaper, it should be A’s and Bs. The Chicago Manual of Style would disagree on different grounds: in that style, it should be As and Bs. Any book editor would swiftly change your copy editing to copyediting. Then there’s your punctuation of “far out.” Most editors outside the United States would swap the places of your period and closing quotation mark.

It gets worse: your punctuation marks could even be creating factual errors. The writer, who did well in college refers to someone different than does the writer who did well in college. That comma changes the identity of the subject and even the number of people it represents because the writer who did well in college can refer to every student who did well in college.

Are you really sure that just one founder called it far out? Or could those be the founders’ words? How sure are you that you’re talking about the readers’ sensibilities and not the reader’s sensibilities? Are you certain you want to leave line up as two unhyphenated words? Are you confident that an em dash is a better choice for setting off that final thought than parentheses or a colon? How would you explain your choice to leave a comma out of what it is is?

How would you feel if, after leaving a comma out of young aspiring middle-grade novelist, you saw a highly respected publication use the same phrase except with a comma after young?

On the surface, punctuation is simple stuff: a system of clear, well-documented rules we all learned in school. But when you sit down to write an article or a story or a business email or a blog post, suddenly it’s not so simple. One after another, situations arise in which the basic rules you thought you knew are no help at all. If you start looking for answers, it can get even more confusing. One of the most well-respected and influential style guides in the country will tell you to put just one comma in red, white and blue. But if you take that as gospel, you’ll be lost when you notice that nearly every book you pick up prefers to throw in another comma before the and, writing it red, white, and blue.
And heaven help you if you start paying attention to how professional editors use hyphens. The truth is, punctuation can be very difficult. Professional writers don’t know it all. Even professional editors look things up, debate them with colleagues, and are sometimes still left guessing.

No one knows everything there is to know about every punctuation mark, and no one is expected to. But that leaves any amateur or professional writer to ask: So what am I expected to know? Will I look stupid if I put a comma here or an apostrophe there? Or do even professional editors share my confusion on this matter?
A lot of people assume that there’s a single correct answer for every punctuation conundrum. Either a comma belongs in a certain spot or it doesn’t. Either the possessive of James is formed by adding an apostrophe plus an s, or it’s formed by adding the apostrophe alone.

The good news here is also the bad news: often there’s more than one right answer. Whether to use a certain punctuation mark can be a matter of choice—the writer’s way of emphasizing his meaning, creating rhythm, or making the words more pleasing to the eye. Other times these questions boil down to a matter of style—the kind with a capital S that’s laid down by one of the publishing world’s official playbooks. Still other times, there is only one correct choice, and if you fail to choose it, you can inadvertently change your meaning.

The goal of this book is let you punctuate every sentence, even those that fall into the gray areas of punctuation rules or style differences, with complete confidence.

Forget the panda book, this is the best punctuation book. Period.
By Ryan J. Dejonghe
I should be nervous. I feel like you are going to judge every usage of my periods, commas, and semicolons. I mean, who in their right minds would write a review on a grammar or usage book? Well, I’m okay because June Casagrande has already taught me that GRAMMAR SNOBS ARE GREAT BIG MEANIES. You can learn about grammar AND have fun. Shocking, isn’t it?

I reviewed that other punctuation book—you know, the one about the pandas shooting each other—and it confirmed Casagrande’s hypothesis about those grammar meanies. Seriously. Here’s a good one from that panda book: “don’t use commas like a stupid person.” Charming, right? Or how about this one: “you deserve to be struck by lightning, hacked up on the spot and buried in an unmarked grave.” In my world that’s….that’s just not nice. Not to mention that book was written for those friends of ours that prefer the Oxford dictionary and who put their commas on the other side of the quotation mark. THE BEST PUNCTUATION BOOK, PERIOD. is a fun and informative book written by one of the coolest, most hip professionals around.

My anticipation for this book revolved around Casagrande’s past style and voice: a bit of a wise crack and a lot of fun. I mean, what other author uses sexual innuendo to teach readers about the predicate nominative? The key word being “fun”. In THE BEST PUNCTUATION BOOK, Casagrande moves toward a more traditional approach. This is a good thing--so much so, you’ll need to buy a couple of copies.

Are you ever curious about the differences between AP Style Guide and the Chicago Manual of Style? Are you one of those people that keep both at their desk? Well, you may then need three copies of Casagrande’s book (e.g., one for the office, one for home, and one for the car). She takes each piece of punctuation, describes their usage, offers examples, and directly compares the input from each major style guide. Where the professionals don’t have opinions, she offers the opinion from a panel of editors. That’s just the first half. The second half is an alphabetized quick-reference. For instance, if you wanted to know if “F-bomb” was hyphenated, you would find it in the back under “F”. I used this to lookup my above referenced “e.g.,” where books, news, science, and academia all agree that a comma is used after it.

Bob Ross gave us happy trees and birds; Casagrande gives us happy em dashes. (That was bad, wasn’t it?) In more serious terms, if you are looking for the most up-to-date desk reference comparing each of the major style guides and usage examples, this is it. Casagrande is the master and indeed has written the best punctuation book, period.

Thanks to Ten Speed Pressing and Crown Publishing for sending me a review copy of this book. I will be standing in line for Casagrande’s next book.

Fun, informative and indispensable, period.
By Chris Rodell
This is the first grammar book I enjoy picking up just to browse. It's full of unexpected surprises that'll brighten and clarify everyone's writing. The book breaks down each challenge into all the prevailing styles: book editing, news media and business, science, and academic style recommended for college papers and academic articles.

So if you're confused about whether "half dollar" is preferable to "half-dollar," you'll see that "half dollar" has both the circled "B" (books) and "N" (news); and that "half-dollar" is the usage you'd find in "S" (science).

Besides that, it's just fun.

Part II is "Punctuation A-Z" and provides a board game sort of appeal that allow aficionados to test themselves and one another with playful challenges.

There's hundreds of simple entries like "airhead, airheaded," and their preferred uses. Need super heroic help? Check out the spelling of "Batman," "Superman, supermen," or "superhero." And that's "for Pete's sake."

And many of the listings are just like that. Uncluttered spellings and the formats for which each is preferred.

The comprehensive listing also includes a salty mix of handy profanities that'll leave stuffier grammar guides huffing, "WTF?"

The book belongs on every desk of every writing discipline.

One quibble: It's mistitled.

The book shouldn't be called, "The best punctuation book, period." It should be called, "The best punctuation book, period. Exclamation point!"

No kidding -- it is the best!

Okay. I'm sure I won't be the only one to say this, but it really does live up to its (clever) title. For a book with such an appealing, simple-to-use layout, it is a complete guide to the most complex punctuation questions.

The other terrific thing about it is that it's not just this author's opinion on what's correct -- she cites the major authorities and lets you choose the appropriate one.

This really is the only punctuation book you'll ever need.

Description inside Dust-jacket.
By patrick
From Inside Dustjacket:

The extraordinary and untold story of Britains child migrants is one of 350 years of shaming exploitation. Around 130,000 children some just 3 or 4 years old, were shipped off to distant parts of the Empire, the last as recently as 1967.

for Britain, it was a cheap way of emptying childrens homes and populating the colonies with 'good British stock', for the colonies it was a source of cheap labour. The so-called philanthropists and child 'care' agencies which set up migration schemes in the last century built up the dream of a new life for the 90 000 children exported to Canada from 1860s to the 1920s was often one of unremitting hardship, working a 16-hour day on isolated farmsteads, they were often beaten and mistreated and never saw their families or the shores of Britain again.

But the real shock is that child migration did not end in 1920s. Even after the Second World War, until it ended some 20 years ago, around 10,000 children were transported to Australia, where many were subjected to at best uncaring abandonment, and at worst a regime of appalling cruelty.

Abuse and deception characterised the Australian schemes .Parents were told that their children had been adopted in Britain, chidren were told that their children were brought up in Australian institutions to beleive they were orphans. Now adults , they still break down when they relate their experiences and for many the search for family has become a life-long crusade. Because of the withholding or absence of information, only some are reunited with mothers and relatives they did not know existed---a reunion of happiness and confusion on one side, and guilt and disbelief on the other.

Lost children of the Empire tells the remarkable story of the Childs Migrants Trust , set-up, in 1987, to trace families and to help those involved to come to terms with what has happened. But nothing can explain away the connivance and irresponsibility of the governments and orgs involved in this inhuman chapter of British history

Lost Children of the Empire was the subject of a major ITV documentary screened in May 1989.

One cannot help but wish to hold these children in your arms seething with a terrible anger!.
By patriciablau
A well researched very worthwhile book filled with heart wringing stories and statistics By the time I was reading "Lost Children" I had been introduced to the subject of child migrants. I was not however, prepared for the stark reality of the day to day suffering on isolated hardscrabble farms. They experienced cold, hunger, painful loneliness, the feeling that no one cared, that they were nobody and yes, beatings! That some migrants grew to adulthood fairly healthy and led rather decent lives is a tribute to the human spirit. Many however, struggled with relationships, trust issues, and low self esteem for life......

Good book...
By Reading4Me
This book is very handy for my Engineering Innovation class! This book provides very useful information for not only engineering design, but also for other things too. For example, one chapter provides very helpful information about presenting designs in both oral and written forms, which is really nice. The book is very detailed and has an easy-to-understand format which makes taking notes and applying them to class discussion, projects, etc. so much easier! I think this book would be helpful for anyone in Engineering, and not just the people taking the class. It was so nice to get it for the price I did too. At my school's book store it would have cost a fortune! It is in almost brand new condition and doesn't have any marks. (yeaa for books in good condition!)

purchased for senior design
By Isabel Stevens
This book is the format for my capstone design class. We had three assignments based on some design documents the text suggested. These were alright, but not overly helpful in guiding nor progressing our design. The other chapters, like the one on group management, were more helpful. Design is a difficult process to generalize or outline. The author does a good job with that part of it. I didn't care as much for the 'emotional' side of things, not because the information was false or unhelpful, but because the ideas are difficult to convey to engineers. Overall, this text guides the design process well.

So Dry
By B. Rowley
Very dry, very long, very drawn out. Cluttered explanations followed be exhaustive case studies. Even my professors agree that this book is only good for skimming and getting ideas from, not as a detailed reference.

From Booklist
Terrifying dreams and enigmatic prophecies mean danger for seven teen demigods, but also good times for fans of The Heroes of Olympus series. This third volume thrusts Percy, Jason, Annabeth, Hazel, Leo, Frank, and Piper into action once again. Representing both Greek and Roman camps, the seven companions undertake a mission to prevent the imminent destruction of Rome, the awakening of Gaea, and the end of the world. Meanwhile, they help Annabeth in her quest to recover the ancient statue of Athena stolen from the Parthenon. Along the way, they encounter Nemesis in Utah, Bacchus in Kansas, Phorcys in Atlanta, Aphrodite in Charleston, and Hercules at the Strait of Gibraltar. Throughout the novel, the juxtaposition of humor and terror makes both aspects of the writing more vivid. The demigods use their wits and their weapons skillfully in a string of encounters, and their insecurities make the characters all the more appealing. With a true storyteller’s sense of pacing, Riordan creates another compelling adventure, right down to the cliff-hanger at the end. Stay tuned for volume four. Grades 5-8. --Carolyn Phelan

After waging two separate quests (The Lost Hero, 2010; The Son of Neptune, 2011), the Greek and Roman demigods of Riordan's Heroes of Olympus quintet join forces. With his now-trademark zero-to-60 acceleration, the author engineers a ghostly possession to set Greeks and Romans at odds and initiates the Prophecy of the Seven, hurtling Annabeth, Percy, Piper, Leo, Hazel, Frank and Jason into a pell-mell flight on the magical trireme Argo II. They seek the titular Mark of Athena, which they hope will provide the key to defeating the vengeful Earth mother, Gaea, or at least some of her giant offspring. As the trireme crosses the country, the pace drags while the demigods sort out relationships and work to figure out both cryptic prophecy and nightmare visions. With sweethearts Annabeth and Percy once again united, much of the tension that powered earlier books is gone. Once the Argo II leaves the United States, though, the pace picks up, and the comically instructive set pieces Riordan's so good at emerge. A Luddite god rails against what he calls the "b-book," which displaced the far superior scroll technology; Annabeth gets a crash course in the cult of Mithros far below the streets of Rome. Here, Riordan's infectious love for his subject matter really comes through, even as he takes some real risks with his characters. Great read, killer ending, but I miss a few characters
By Erin Beeler Loesch
Overall, another great read by Rick Riordan. I love the complexities of the relationships. I kind of feel bad for Leo, but that's his lot in life. The relationships between Piper and Jason and Percy and Annabeth are well drafted. I'm so glad to finally hear Annabeth's heart and inside her head. And the Percabeth love story, with their struggles just to be together, was well written and exciting. Piper and Jason were fairly well explained, but I wish we could know just a little more. It feels like their love story is written mostly from Jason's view and less from Piper. Perhaps, that's just because they don't have much of a story yet...more in the next book?. I do feel like there is a background story to Percy and Annabeth...perhaps based in Greek mythology?...that gives more depth to their role. I don't think it's just a 21st Century affair.

I really wish there had been more of a story with Hazel and Frank, though. They were explained alright in Son of Neptune, but they are neglected in Mark of Athena.

Leo definately took center stage...especially the ending. I want so badly to see him succeed and for everyone to see his true heart. Definately loving Leo almost as much as the Percy/Annabeth saga.

Pretty much hate the Romans right now...but I guess that's the point. I hope Reyna can work her magic. Or that Octavian falls in a ditch and gets buried...either/or. :)

It's going to be an agonizing wait...Rick Riordan, you are cruel for that ending, but I absolutely loved it. Great work! Do we have a name or even a possible release date to mark on the calendar?

Love the series
By Review Nerd
My son absolutely loves this series. Keep writing and he will keep reading!

Annabeth is terrified. Just when she's about to be reunited with Percy—after six months of being apart, thanks to Hera—it looks like Camp Jupiter is preparing for war. As Annabeth and her friends Jason, Piper, and Leo fly in on the Argo II, she can't blame the Roman demigods for thinking the ship is a Greek weapon. With its steaming bronze dragon masthead, Leo's fantastical creation doesn't appear friendly. Annabeth hopes that the sight of their praetor Jason on deck will reassure the Romans that the visitors from Camp Half-Blood are coming in peace.

And that's only one of her worries. In her pocket Annabeth carries a gift from her mother that came with an unnerving demand: Follow the Mark of Athena. Avenge me. Annabeth already feels weighed down by the prophecy that will send seven demigods on a quest to find—and close— the Doors of Death. What more does Athena want from her?

Annabeth's biggest fear, though, is that Percy might have changed. What if he's now attached to Roman ways? Does he still need his old friends? As the daughter of the goddess of war and wisdom, Annabeth knows she was born to be a leader, but never again does she want to be without Seaweed Brain by her side.

Narrated by four different demigods, The Mark of Athena is an unforgettable journey across land and sea to Rome, where important discoveries, surprising sacrifices, and unspeakable horrors await. Climb aboard the Argo II, if you dare…

If you loved Percy Jackson this is for you
By Antonio Greco
Firstly, Rick Riordan is just a fantastic author. His stories are always great. As a fan of the Percy Jackson series I started the Heroes of Olympus series simply because it takes place afterwards. The Mark of Athena is the 3rd book in the Heroes of Olympus Series. I can honestly say that this is one of my favorite series, and is definitely as good, if not better than the original Percy Jackson Series. This is a must get for Percy Jackson fans or anyone that enjoys Greek or Roman mythology.

My only complaint with the book is the audience it is written for. I wish Rick Riordan would make his novels less child-ish and more towards young-adults. This is not a deal breaker though, they are appropriate for young readers and are still very enjoyable for young adults or even adults as well.

2016 National Book Award Winner for Young People's Literature
"One of the Best Books of 2016" - PublishersWeekly

Welcome to the stunning conclusion of the award-winning andbest-selling MARCH trilogy. Congressman John Lewis, an American icon and one ofthe key figures of the civil rights movement, joins co-writer Andrew Aydin andartist Nate Powell to bring the lessons of history to vivid life for a newgeneration, urgently relevant for today's world.
By the fall of 1963, theCivil Rights Movement has penetrated deep into the American consciousness, andas chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, John Lewis isguiding the tip of the spear. Through relentless direct action, SNCC continuesto force the nation to confront its own blatant injustice, but for every stepforward, the danger grows more intense: Jim Crow strikes back through legaltricks, intimidation, violence, and death. The only hope for lasting change isto give voice to the millions of Americans silenced by voter suppression:"One Man, One Vote."

To carry out their nonviolentrevolution, Lewis and an army of young activists launch a series of innovativecampaigns, including the Freedom Vote, Mississippi Freedom Summer, and anall-out battle for the soul of the Democratic Party waged live on nationaltelevision.
With these new struggles come new allies, new opponents, and anunpredictable new president who might be both at once. But fractures within themovement are deepening ... even as 25-year-old John Lewis prepares to riskeverything in a historic showdown high above the Alabama river, in a town calledSelma.

Gr 8 Up—In the final installment in the trilogy, Congressman Lewis concludes his firsthand account of the civil rights era. Simultaneously epic and intimate, this dynamic work spotlights pivotal moments (the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL; the Freedom Summer murders; the 1964 Democratic National Convention; and the Selma to Montgomery marches) through the lens of one who was there from the beginning. Lewis's willingness to speak from the heart about moments of doubt and anguish imbues the book with emotional depth. Complex material is tackled but never oversimplified—many pages are positively crammed with text—and, as in previous volumes, discussion of tensions among the various factions of the movement adds nuance and should spark conversation among readers. Through images of steely-eyed police, motion lines, and the use of stark black backgrounds for particularly painful moments, Powell underscores Lewis's statement that he and his cohorts "were in the middle of a war." These vivid black-and-white visuals soar, conveying expressions of hope, scorn, and devastation and making storied figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Fannie Lou Hamer feel three-dimensional and familiar. VERDICT This essential addition to graphic novel shelves, history curricula, and memoir collections will resonate with teens and adults alike.—Mahnaz Dar, School Library Journal

Review
"March is one of the most important graphic novels ever created -- an extraordinary presentation of an extraordinary life, and proof that young people can change the world. I'm stunned by the power of these comics, and grateful that Congressman Lewis's story will enlighten and inspire future generations of readers and leaders." -- Raina Telgemeier

"An incredible accomplishment. It is the history of John Lewis, the civil rights movement and his role in it... a book that explains -- more deeply than anything else I've ever read -- the methods and the moral foundations of the civil rights movement, how civil rights activists did what they did and won what they won, and how they had the strength to do it in the most difficult circumstances imaginable." -- Rachel Maddow

"The closest American peer to Maus has arrived." -- The Washington Post

"I cannot recommend this book enough." -- Trevor Noah

"March may be the best civil rights story ever... I would even put it in the same hallowed category as Art Spiegelman's Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus." -- Mashable

BOOKLIST (STARRED) -- A stirring call to action that's particularly timely in this election year, and one that will resonate and empower young readers in particular. Essential reading.

KIRKUS (STARRED) -- A living icon of the civil rights movement brings his frank and stirring account of the movement's most tumultuous years (so far) to a climax.

As chairman of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee between 1963 and 1966, Lewis was directly involved in both public demonstrations and behind-the-scenes meetings with government officials and African-American leaders. He recalls both with unflinching honesty in this trilogy closer carrying his account from the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church to his eventual break with SNCC's increasingly radical elements. Alternating stomach-turning incidents of violence (mostly police violence)-including his own vicious clubbing on the Selma to Montgomery march's "Bloody Sunday"-with passages of impassioned rhetoric from many voices, he chronicles the growing fissures within the movement. Still, despite the wrenching realization that "we were in the middle of a war," he steadfastly holds to nonviolent principles. The passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act marks the end of his account, though he closes with a final look ahead to the night of Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration. Powell's high-contrast black-and-white images underscore the narrative's emotional intensity with a parade of hate-filled white faces and fearful but resolute black ones, facing off across a division that may not be as wide as it was then but is still as deep.

This memoir's unique eyewitness view of epochal events makes it essential reading for an understanding of those times-and these. (Graphic memoir. 11 & up)

SHELF-AWARENESS -- The March series--Congressman John Lewis, Capitol Hill staffer Andrew Aydin and illustrator Nate Powell's Eisner Award-winning project documenting the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s in comic book format--concludes with a message that has proven to be just as relevant in 2016 as it was 50 years ago.

The third volume continues where the second left off. Less than a month after Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) leader John Lewis led the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, four teenage girls are killed in a bombing at the 16th Street Baptist Church's Youth Day celebration in Birmingham, Ala. Members of Dr. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the SNCC are outraged and threaten to march on the Alabama capital to demand the resignation of Governor George Wallace. Before either group can take action, however, news comes of President Kennedy's assassination. While Lyndon B. Johnson ultimately champions their cause, he does so without changing the status quo. As the SNCC and SCLC continue their protests, their efforts incite further violent backlash from the police and surrounding communities, and fractious struggles within the SNCC threaten to derail the march from Selma to Montgomery.

There is a lot of tension and emotion with no sugarcoating of history here; Powell's drawings evoke a close-up black-and-white documentary atmosphere, recording the movement's major victories as well as the tumult that the young Lewis faced. Nevertheless, March: Book Three ends on a hopeful note. What better way to teach younger generations than by historical example of what is achievable when people are willing to sacrifice greatly for a worthy cause? --Nancy Powell , freelance writer and technical consultant

Discover: John Lewis and Martin Luther King make "good trouble... necessary trouble" by leading the history-changing march from Selma to Montgomery.

amazing, stunning finish to an incredible 3 volume set - every American should read this
By Frank L. Greenagel Jr.
This is the third and final March book. The three have been published over the last 18 months and are both the autobiography of the first 25 years of John Lewis's life (plus a few moments from January of 2009) and a moving and powerful history of the Civil Rights movement in Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama between 1960 and 1965.

This volume begins with the bombing of the 16th street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, that took the lives of four young black girls. It covers the Freedom Summer in Mississippi in 1964, the murder of three Civil Rights workers there (and that were deftly covered in the 1988 movie Mississippi Burning), the Democratic convention in Atlantic City and the Presidential election of 1964. It culminates in the March from Selma to Montgomery in March of 1965. John Lewis is beaten nearly to death on the bridge. The violence, racism and denial of basic rights were on full view for the American public to see on television and read about in papers from coast to coast.

There is a particularly touching moment 2/3 through this volume where President Obama hands Mr. Lewis a handwritten note just after his inauguration. It's incredibly moving, and if you want to know what it is, you have to buy this book.

I will be assigning this to my social work students at Rutgers next spring (and in subsequent springs) as part of a section on civil rights, race and the criminal justice system.

Last month, Book 2 won the Eisner Award. I expect Book 3 will win in 2017.

I have a difficult time explaining how much I love this series
By Amy North
I have a difficult time explaining how much I love this series. It is extremely eye opening. What a creative way to tell Congressman John Lewis's story of his time fighting for civil rights in the 1960s. His perspective teaches us so much about the hard work that went into the civil rights movement. I found the pages portraying the scenes at the Edmund Pettus bridge very difficult to read. Trying to comprehend what happened to the young men and women on Bloody Sunday brought tears to my eyes. I hope that teachers utilize this series as a tool to show their students this important era of American history.

Everyone needs these books
By Brenda
I bought these for my grandchildren to learn the history of the civil rights. I grew up in Al durning this time frame (giving away my age) and it was important to me that they understand all that happened especially more than they can get in school. They loved the books and plan to read again. We will have these to pass along to every generation. Important for younger children to understand the struggles and what we as "whites" have done and continue to do to people who don't look like us. Can not recommend high enough. Thank you John Lewis!!

Perfect
By MsSCMomof4
This was ideal for my fifth grader who was embarrassed that he had never learned cursive. This gave him lots of practice and immediately had him linking letters to make words which was important to making quick progress. He worked on this book over the summer and now that he is back in school, he feels very confident he can write in cursive!

Beginning Traditional Cursive
By tracey w.
I purchased this with my 8 year old in mind. The schools don't seem to set cursive writing as a priority anymore, so we took it upon ourselves to teach our son cursive. It helps a lot to show him direction on letter formation. It could use more arrows to indicate direction, because he tries to start from the bottom. Highly recommend this for writing practice.

It is difficult to find a good cursive writing work book. I like this one very much. I only wish there hundreds of pages and cursive writing takes lots of practice. I book with so few pages is impractical. I need 20 books.
