About the Author
Overview takes its inspiration from Daily Overview—an Instagram project established by author BENJAMIN GRANT. Since he began the project in December 2013, his daily posts have both delighted and challenged his audience from all corners of the globe. For Overview, Grant has curated and created more than 200 original images by stitching together numerous high‑resolution satellite photographs. With each Overview, Grant aims to not only inspire a fresh perspective of our planet but also encourage a new understanding of what human impact looks like. He lives and rides his bike in New York City.

INTRODUCTION

This all began with an accident. I was preparing for a meeting of a space club that I started and since the upcoming talk was focused on satellites and how they affect our daily lives, I was playing around on a mapping program. I typed “Earth” into the search bar to see if it would zoom out to show the entire planet. When I pressed enter, to my surprise, it did the opposite of what I hoped for, and zoomed in.

The map had indeed settled on Earth—Earth, Texas. I was astounded by what I saw. My screen had filled with a stunning patchwork of green and brown circles. I saved the image (seen here on the left) and showed it to my friends; they, too, were amazed. It turns out my entire screen contained pivot irrigation fields, created by sprinklers that water crops in a circular pattern.

A few months before I discovered Earth in Texas, a friend shared a short film with me called Overview. The film introduced me to the idea of the “Overview Effect”—an idea that changed the way I see our planet and its place in the universe. Coined by Frank White in 1987, the “Overview Effect” refers to the profound emotional sensation that astronauts experience when given the opportunity to look down at Earth from space. From a distant vantage point, one has the chance to appreciate our home as a whole, to reflect on its beauty and its fragility all at once.

The anecdotes of the astronauts in the film inspired the map search for “Earth” that fortuitously led me astray a few months later. They also helped me realize that there needs to be a dramatic shift in the way our species views our planet before we can truly understand the full extent of our impact. As inspirational as this idea was, I had no clue how I, or anyone for that matter, could make that shift happen. For me, everything changed once I saw those crop circles.

Favorite book we own!

I am blown away by the beauty of this book! I bought it as a present for my husband who loves space, but now we both can't put it down! It is museum quality art on our coffee table and it is now our favorite book in our home!

I have been a dedicated follower of @dailyoverview for a while now. This book has completely exceeded my expectations and takes the project to a completely new level. It is thorough and thought provoking- I have been completely engrossed by it from the moment it arrived. The photographs are beautiful. The words are informative. But, the conversations that have already grown out of this book are truly the best part. If you want to understand how we have altered the face of our planet, I highly suggest buying Overview.

I was not disappointed! I've been enjoying his Instagram account ever since

I just happened upon Benjamin's Instagram account about a year ago. I don't remember what the picture was that initially caught my attention, but after enjoying the single image I clicked on his account to see what else he had for me. I was not disappointed! I've been enjoying his Instagram account ever since.

When my book finally arrived, I took it out of the box and immediately sat in my recliner for about 30 minutes (all that my 6-year-old would allow me) enjoying it. I happen to be an avid reader, but if you are NOT a reader, you will find yourself reading this anyway! There's simply no chance that you'll look at the pictures and carelessly flip the page without the least bit of curiosity about the "what" or "where" of the image before you. I didn't get far in that 30 minutes. The images have to be savored, the captions simply must be read, and you have no choice but to explain the images to any nosey toddlers in the vicinity while insisting that you can flip your own pages, thank you very much!

And let's face it - these images are so much better in a large book than a little Samsung. I don't own a single photography book other than this one. In our day and age, I guess it takes a lot to impress me or to hold my interest. We have so much available to us that true intrigue can be very elusive. Well, this book will definitely intrigue!

I've also never bothered to leave a review on Amazon before. Just too lazy to bother. But I really felt I should. This book is just different. There's not much else like it. Of course I'm referring to the content. However, the presentation and organization are stellar. Very nicely done!

This is a timely book that produces insightful conclusions drawn from objective observations and research evidence obtained through the writer's associates, friends, connections and government or party officials in China.

Born 50 years ago and educated in Hong kong, I have been living and working here all along. I have found this book has presented objectively, with the support of evidence, the observations and the current situation in today's China, that most mainlanders and even Hongkongers have been already well aware of, but many of them have chosen to turn a blind eye to them or have decided to refuse to accept them by saying that all these have been fabricated by some people with ill intention.

This book has helped me clear some doubts as to why the party-state always uses heavy-hand approach to subdue civil right activists, though many of them just employing gentle attitude and mild actions. In addition, it also explains why after 2012 when Xi Jinping took over the helm, he has been tightening control within CCP, in different aspects of the society, and on every level of government, including, recently, applying unprecedented controls on some cornerstones of Hong kong in defiance of strong oppositions from Hongkongers.

Lately, he has solidified the political, military and economic powers into his ownself alone as the core of the party-state, making himself comparable with Deng Xiaoping and Mao Zedong. The book also provides a logical reason behind Xi's move to concentration of powers.

Though the book's conclusions are critical and maybe objectionable to the pro Beijing Chinese, it helps many understand more why the leaders of the party-state have done what have been done to their countrymen in wake of the era of Mao, which might be, sadly but angrily to say, necessary from the point of view of CCP for their ambition to maintain its perpetual leadership in China.

Overestimating China, Underestimating its Leaders

This monograph of China explains the entire government structure, including naming all the opaque black boxes in the schema. It lays out the rankings, the social services, the offices, the departments, and most importantly, the guiding principles of all of them - The Party. It is comprehensive, realistic, and most of all, revealing. China is not doing nearly as well as it says or we think.

Ringen says the present nihilistic, materialistic, money grubbing state of China is a direct result of the Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989. At that time the Chinese believed they were on an upward curve, but The Party/state informed them in no uncertain terms that freedom was not and never would be available to the Chinese. “The economy is for the state; it is not for the other way around,” Ringen says. As long as the perception is that China is growing at near double digit rates, people and business are pacified, and The Party can flourish. That is why the official statistics are all lies.

Like any garden variety dictatorship, China is paranoid. There are files on literally everyone. There are untold numbers of different police forces, operating thuggishly and plainclothesed. Local officials are promoted on the basis of their intelligence gathering. Local housewives are community spies. Photocopy stores feed directly to intelligence services. Arrest and unlimited detention do not require charges, and when they come, they are often bizarre and clearly not in violation of any law. Nonetheless, people are sometimes held for life, their families evicted, and if they had students, they can be jailed and tortured too. Nothing can interfere with the ethos The Party wants for China. Ringen’s longest most detailed chapter concerns such cases of arrest or censorship. It seems that China’s whole internal focus is to prevent people coming together. Any concerted effort from anywhere is crushed, often before it can act. That is how thorough and subversive the intelligence gathering is. The country can afford over a million people censoring the internet, but it won’t allow people driven from the countryside to the cities the same social rights as city dwellers. Ringen says China has performed remarkably poorly in raising living standards, compared to other countries such as South Korea or even Britain when compared from the same starting point in 1949. The Party, however, has performed miracles for its members. Ringen estimates the state skims more than half and possibly two-thirds of GDP. It clearly does not give that much back. Taxes are oppressive, and daily corruption adds to the burden.

The bulk of the book examines the structures in place: the tax structure, the safety net, the justice system, the hukou residency system, the class system, and of course, The Party, for which everything else has been built. Ringen says China is not there for its people (a welfare state) and it is not there for its vision (ideological state). It is there purely to support, sustain and promote The Party, which he calls a “trivial state” – no greater purpose.

Ringen cautions that we might be at common turning point, one we always miss. The rise of the Nazis, the rise of the USSR – and maybe now China. The parallels are eerily similar. We have long, and continue to pretend, that China is moving towards liberalization and democracy. It isn’t. It is moving to secure the future of The Party, and that does not involve either democracy or liberalization, he says. The leadership makes no bones about it. The sooner we start taking the official words of Chinese leaders literally, the better we will be positioned to deal with the fallout.

China is a fascinating country with a very interesting political and economic system that is often inscrutable to outsiders. This book sets out to explain how things work in the country today and seek to guess how things will be in the future.

The system may be protected by a façade or misunderstanding, aided perhaps by a spate of good fortune. The author believes that the government today is a relatively hard-line regime that is less strong economically and more dictatorial politically than the world has wanted to believe. This reviewer doesn’t know, but the author seemingly knows his stuff and puts forward a sensitive, powerful and engaging series of arguments to sustain his position. It brings forth a number of interesting questions and observations against the Chinese state which, at worst case, could translate into traumatic economic actions and maybe even civil disturbances. The author goes against the grain and does not agree that the existing system works for the common Chinese good, even if it may appear different to western eyes.

The Chinese economy is large and there has been massive economic growth, yet the economy has not transformed into a strong, structured and sustainable system. Question marks exist as to whether it has been built on a weak, questionable structure that may fall down like the proverbial house of cards in the future. If it should happen, the reverberations both internally and externally will be long-ranging. Are the current leaders really leading, or clinging on with a harsh, dictatorial style, desperately trying to keep the train on its tracks? The author seems to believe that that they are struggling to keep the lid on things rather than driving the country forward with a strict, authoritarian yet benevolent style. What of the future? The author believes that there is a tug-of-war about ideologies and how they are implemented and it is far from clear which side will win.

This was a fascinating and enjoyable book that is packed full of information that provides a great overview of China and a bit of what makes the country tick. The book does not claim to have all the answers or even can develop all of the key questions, yet it does not pull its punches with what it can comment on. You don’t even need to be a “China nerd” to enjoy this book. It is more than capable of satisfying the casual, curious reader at the same time.

Another great book from a great author

After the surprise from Book 1, I was looking forward to seeing how Book 2 would unfold. I was not disappointed. This book dives more into details from book 1. I do not recommend reading this book without reading the first book.

All the characters that we have grown to love still play a role in this book. We are introduced to a new character Frankie's teacher. Frankie is also given a more prominent role in this book. I enjoyed reading about Frankie and her quest to understand and share the truth about what happened in Edenville when her grandma was a child.

Danielle Stewart has done it again. She creates a wonderful story that you fell apart of. As you read you take sides on the issues. You find yourself agreeing with some of the characters and disliking others.

There is also an epilogue about Frankie and makes me want to know what Frankie's story will be. I hope I do not have to wait too long for the next book :)

I liked this book. Thanks goodness it wasn't a "continuation of the first one; no, this was Simpson's story that includes Betty where the first was the opposite.

It is however a continuation of the telling of a story of racial hate, hurt & longstanding human ugliness. When will it end? When humans understand skin color is no different than differences in hair color. It is what it is. We're ALL still humans.

When I read the first book, Flowers in the Snow, I thought book 2 could be nowhere near as good. Well, I was so wrong. Kiss in the Wind is fabulous. It is one of those "can't put down" books. Danielle Stewart please hurry and write book 3. Love this series!!

Great Resource for Outdoorsmen & Nature Lovers

Larry Dean Olsen's book is funny, informative, and full of helpful photos and illustrations. It's written by an experienced outdoorsman who's tested these techniques in the field for most of his life. For anyone interested in survival skills, this is a must-have.

Westerners will get particularly good information from the chapter on wild plant uses, as well as the color-plate appendix for plant identification. I've carried this book in field and found it a great resource on a number of occasions. (Hmmm....I don't THINK that's death camas, but maybe I should check!).

Ancient tool enthusiasts will find helpful hints for constructing useful field equipment (stone axes, knife blades, cordage, fire drills) as well as tips on constructing emergency shelters.

There's even a section on harvesting wild animals.

A great resource. If you travel a lot, I recommend you keep a copy in car for emergency situations or just some good old-fashioned exploring!

Fun to Read, by a man who knows his stuff

This book is still used and recommended by the Boulder Outdoor Survival School, possibly the most reputable school in the business. Larry Dean Olsen, the author, is a guru in the field, and quite an amusing writer as well. This book is a classic, having come out originally in 1967 (my copy is the 30th anniversary edition from 1997). This is not a book for weekend backpackers, it is a text for those who want to explore and preserve true primitive survival skills - living off the land, friction fires, etc. If that is what you are looking for, this book is a great choice.

Law Students in VC classes

This book is an excellent primer for law students in VC/entrepreneurial finance classes, and I think is currently the most popular text for those kinds of classes. Even if it's not your required text, I'd recommend it; while the price is high, it's presented very well, and is probably the most concise text I've found on the subject. And attorneys who work in the field have told me that it's an invaluable desk reference. It is geared towards the attorney, so non-lawyers might find it cumbersome. But all in all, if you want to know the law in this area, this book's for you.

I read this book twice (not the appendix though, which is the support for the text), it incorporates tax law and practice, GAAP, and SEC issues with Venture Capital and similar transactions. It explains how to start a fund, how to structure deals, and how to exit the investment as well as familiarize the reader with the VC industry. Very detailed book and easy reading.

Not your typical Aesop fables.

I will not recommend this book! Aesop fables as I remember had some moral at the end of the story. These stories don't even match the original stories in translation. Awful!!!! Do not buy
