Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, June 2014: Two men, both attempting to remain invisible to the world around them, are unknowingly at odds. “Pilgrim” is an American intelligence operative who, despite wanting to retire to a “normal” life, stumbles upon the biggest case of his career. His story starts with an unrelated murder in a seedy New York hotel room and quickly escalates to a matter of national security. The events unfold in slow motion, and we see the past and present from both Pilgrim’s perspective and that of his unknown adversary, a man of single-minded devotion and incredible danger. In his debut novel, Hollywood screenwriter and producer Terry Hayes has concocted a riveting 600-page read that is part police procedural, part international spy thriller, and all ready for adaptation. --Robin A. Rothman

From Booklist
*Starred Review* It looks like the perfect murder: an unidentifiable victim—a young woman found in a low-rent Manhattan hotel, face down in a bathtub of acid, teeth removed, fingerprints and face gone, and a murder scene devoid of fingerprints, DNA, or any other identifiers. The homicide detective in charge, Ben Bradley, is a long time friend of Pilgrim, a retired CIA operative who has penned a textbook on criminal investigations that the murderer has apparently read. Pilgrim, retired and reclusive, is drawn into the case by Bradley and is quickly in the middle of an international manhunt moving through the United Kingdom, France, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan. This is more than just a murder mystery; there is also a biological threat against the U.S., which ties into the murder. The characters are skillfully brought to life in this action-packed worldwide adventure, and Pilgrim is a quick-witted and thoroughly fascinating protagonist. Growing up as the adopted son in a very wealthy family, he is a brilliant loner recruited by the Division, a top-secret black ops group that is eventually disbanded. His adversary here, another loner, nicknamed Saracen, grew up in Saudi Arabia, where his father was beheaded for criticizing the king; international politics makes for fascinating backstory. The novel is gruesome at times, but none of the violence is gratuitous, and unfortunately, it all feels quite real and believable. Don’t be put off by the length of this book. The story is tightly plotted, and the pages fly by ferociously fast. Simply unputdownable. --Stacy Alesi

Move over Jackal, here comes Pilgrim?
By Suncoast
This is definitely the best covert ops/terrorism/murder book I have read this year. Whether it gets into my top 10 best thrillers depends on how long it remains in my memory. There is a lot to remember in a complex 700 page book that left me with so many impressions - intelligent and clever, superbly and deeply plotted, brilliant characterisation, ambitious, enthralling, page-turning, action-packed and mostly unpredictable.

Pilgrim is the codename chosen by a man who doesn't want to exist. An adopted son of a wealthy family he has always been a loner and after college becomes part of an unknown covert US government group. After becoming the star operator in the group in an operation in Russia he goes into anonymous retirement and writes an obscure book under a pseudonym about the forensic background to the perfect crime. Can anyone commit the perfect crime using this information?

On the other side of the world in Saudi Arabia another youth grows up in a world where his father is beheaded for being reported to the secret police for criticising the King. This leads him into a life dedicated to Islam but also a life dedicated to eliminating the US, the country who supports the Saudi regime and fights his fundamentalist Islamic ideals. This is the birth of a terrorist called Saracen, a loner with long term plans to change the world.

Hayes takes us on an epic and unpredictable journey by Pilgrim to solve a perfect crime and at the same time find Saracen before he can deliver a far greater blow to the US than a nuclear holocaust. The action moves from the US to Afghanistan, Lebanon, the Gaza Strip, and Turkey in a maze of seemingly unconnected events and builds up to a potentially cataclysmic ending.

Along the way Terry Hayes sows seeds that grow in unexpected parts of the plot. Sometimes I spotted the seeds but rarely worked out where they would grow. This cleverly designed unpredictability was to me the keystone of Haye's writing powers. At the end of the book he reflects that he had been told that writing a movie is like swimming in a bath and writing a novel is like swimming in the ocean. With his writing skills I think that Hayes would have no difficulty swimming across the (literary) Channel.

Terry Hayes has had a remarkable writing career as a journalist, and TV and movie screenwriter in Australia and the US and this novel is the start of what could become an important career as a novelist. Dame Gail Rebuck, CBE (Chair of Penguin Random House) has reportedly called it "The best debut thriller since Day of the Jackal". I am inclined to agree.

Note: This book is published in Australia, NZ and the UK but won't be released in the US until May 2014.

A Good, But Flawed Debut Novel By A Potentially Top-Notch Thriller Writer!
By Bobbewig
I won't provide a summary of the plot in my review as this can be obtained in the Book Description on Amazon, Goodreads, etc. I'll just say that what starts off as a very challenging murder investigation turns into a break-neck race against time by the former head of a secret US government organization to try to stop a terrorist attack that could bring the US to the brink of disaster. To say more than this runs the risk of providing spoilers or, at a minimum, to potentially detract from your ability to find out for yourself what occurs in the book.

After reading the first 100 or so pages of the 624-page Kindle edition of I Am Pilgrim, I was sure that this book was on its way to receiving a 5-star rating from me. However, the next 400 or so pages were so descriptive of every move and thought by the "good guy" and the "bad guy" with little action and thrills occurring on these pages that I often found myself just "eyeballing" many pages, with the hope that the book's pace would fulfill my ingoing expectations for an action-packed thriller. A more secondary issue I had with this book is that, while it was very descriptive of many elements pertaining to the main characters' behaviors and attitudes, it did not provide me with a strong enough sense of what they LOOKED like so that I could form a picture of them in my mind. As such, they came off as sort of "faceless" people to me.

Ultimately, my expectations were fulfilled in the last 75 pages or so -- and I Am Pilgrim fulfilled my expectations during these pages in a BIG way! I found that I couldn't turn these last pages fast enough to find out how the book ended. As a result of its final pages, my overall rating which I initially thought was going to be 5-stars, and then dropped to what I thought would be no more than a 3-star ("It was okay") rating, wound up earning a 4-star ("I liked it") rating overall.

If you think this "up and down ride" with I Am Pilgrim would be a problem for you, than I suggest you definitely save your time and money and read something else. However, if you think that its exciting conclusion would override the flaws mentioned above, than I think I Am Thriller is one you'd enjoy. And, if the latter is the case, I think you'll agree with me that first-time novelist, Terry Hayes, has the potential to eventually become a top-notch thriller writer. I, for you, will be looking forward to reading his next book, which I expect will feature the same main character.

I received an e-copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in return for an honest review.

Brilliantly conceived battle of two Titans
By plane
An extremely literate story about a battle between two titans of their respective sides. One is an American, adopted son of a family with a great deal of privilege, currently an agent for a U.S. government agency only depicted as higher than the CIA. The other is a poor Arab boy born in Saudi Arabia but turned into a terrorist by the Saudi's execution of his father for no apparent reason. The American uses the name of Pilgrim in order to hide his real identity and has become one of the most effective agents his agency has. The Arab is turned onto terrorism by the Saudi's execution of his father just because the man spoke badly of the king. He decides that revenge against Saudi Arabia would be best served by a massive terrorist attack on the United States, which he deems the Saudi's ally. He proceeds to buildup a well prepared background becoming known as the Saracen in order to effect this attack.
Hayes is brilliant in developing the two characters, their motivations, their reactions to each other as mortal enemies. The reader knows each one intimately through the author's descriptions and can relate to their actions on an ongoing basis. What the Saracen decides to use to attack the United States demands a preparation that only a very bright mind could conceive of and work towards. It is a credible threat that the reader will be able to identify as possible. Pilgrim's planning and actions against this enemy must be even more clever in order to win the mental battle between them.
The action moves back and forth starting with a murder investigation in New York and ending in Turkey.
Hayes, in an afterward, indicates that film rights are in process and I would certainly be a fan of that if it comes out. In the meanwhile I do trust that the author is planning more books for the near future, and those I will grab as soon as available.

The Grid: Blueprint for a New Computing Infrastructure (The Elsevier Series in Grid Computing)From Brand: Morgan Kaufmann

The grid promises to fundamentally change the way we think about and use computing. This infrastructure will connect multiple regional and national computational grids, creating a universal source of pervasive and dependable computing power that supports dramatically new classes of applications. The Grid provides a clear vision of what computational grids are, why we need them, who will use them, and how they will be programmed.

Amazon.com Review
Beyond the Net, say Foster, Kesselman, and a host of impressive contributors, lies the Grid. While the Net allows users everywhere to share information, the Grid will allow users to share raw computing power. The goal is to put full supercomputing capabilities into the hands of anyone who needs it while providing for more efficient use of the supercomputers of tomorrow. The potential benefits to science, government, and business may well be beyond imagination.

Foster and Kesselman have gathered together essays, proposals, and ruminations of more than 30 distinguished stars of the high-speed computing and networking world in order to do four things: make the case for developing computational grids, provide ideas on how such grids may be designed, demonstrate how the grids might be used, and point out the research still needed to make it happen. While the book was written to serve as a possible textbook in advanced networking, it makes fascinating reading for anyone interested in the future of network computing.

The text covers Grid applications, the programming tools required, the services that will be provided, and an examination of Grid infrastructure. Despite being the work of so many authors, the chapters are logically arranged so that the knowledge needed to understand one chapter is provided by those that precede it. --Elizabeth Lewis

Startling look into the future
By Michael J. Gambale
I don't understand some of the critical reviews of this book. The fact is that Grids do exist today and are being used by Research oriented companies. About two dozen companies are already serving clients in the realm of grid computing. Platform Computing, United Devices, and Avaki are just three companies who are helping to create the future of the grid computing. The web succeded because it connected everybody. Until larger grids are contructed for business enterprises I agree that grid computing will not grow. The book does a great job of showing what the future may be like in terms of grid computing. Someday your computing resources will come from your local Grid Computing Company just as you get electricity from your Power Company. How that comes to be is still the ultimate question.

Mind Boggling Computing Power As a Household Utility?
By miha@internetcorp.net
The Grid's most important function is as a manifesto: It says, hey guys, we will plug-in a simple PC into the wall, and we will have at our fingertips any computational power we need. We can simulate a crash of cars with a very fine precision, in program which needs perhaps 4 weeks to run on supercomputers filling a large room.
Some pieces of software, named tools, will find the fastest way to any computer in the world, or to any number of computers in the world, which are available for you. You can hire them, you can lease them, you can pay as you use them. We may even buy a Grid Card, like a plastic calling card, and do all the computing, until the card is depleted.
All it will be possible. One day, every single supercomputer in the world will be part of the GRID making money for its owners.
How people will collaborate? Here there is a void to be filled by some giant future computer utilities corporations, not yet born. AOL can become one of them, and increase its size hundreds of times. The telecom giants of today can take leadership. Or some new start up, a name no one has heard yet, will become the code named GRID Inc.
But the GRID Inc. (my own fiction) is not a fiction in 'The Grid' edited by Ian Foster and Carl Kesselman: the reader sees the blueprint. In the next edition, we would love to add the chapter for the Global Resources Director (GRD) a software that optimizes resources in a distributed heterogeneous environment.
The people minds shift. Computer Power as electricity? Will we have at home a power-meter measured in a computing unit, something equivalent to Kilowatts? Why not?.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the GRID is coming. Ian Foster and Carl Kesselman are the first to announce it.
The rest is history.

This book has several billion dollar business plans
By A Customer
The Grid seems like a book from the future. I've bought over 100 books related to the Internet looking for ideas that could lead to a public company, but this one is the best. The Grid starts with simple comparisons (Chicago came from rail and 'caching' of grain elevators and stock yards) then gets technical. The topics are covered by experts and include distributed computing, sensing, and teleimmersion, programming tools, services, schedulers, resource management, visualization, security, protocols, Quality of Service, operating systems and interfaces. The pen-ultimate section was co-authored by recently deceased Internet Society head Jon Postel, and is my favorite. If covers the past, present and future of network infrastructure. The last section is test beds. At the risk of seeming ungrateful for this gold mine of future net business, there are a few omissions that I missed including the Grid in mixed environments. Low-earth orbit satellites and wireless IP broadband could have been covered, as they will be the very important parts of the Grid. The VR section totals only about ten pages and, surprisingly, doesn't even touch on entertainment applications, though entertainment (including porn) has driven many 'seeds of the grid', including video, CD-ROMs, and streaming video. A few books that might be interesting: Peter Glaser's Solar Power Satellites is very complementary: with cheap power everywhere, the grid can cover the earth, seas and even leap up into space. If you haven't read it already, I'd toss Kurzweil's Age of Intelligent Machines into the Amazon shopping cart to fill in the AI and VR gap. If you want to see how grids could grow into gods, I'd also highly recommend David Zindell's The Wild. I'm open to corresponding about where The Grid goes and grows from here, especially from investors with the know how or desire to capitalize on the new entities that will grow out of the grid, or be used to create it.

Washed and Waiting: Reflections on Christian Faithfulness and Homosexuality, by Wesley Hill

"Gay," "Christian," and "celibate" don't often appear in the same sentence. Yet many who sit next to us in the pew at church fit that description, says author Wesley Hill.

As a celibate gay Christian, Hill gives us a glimpse of what it looks like to wrestle firsthand with God's "No" to same-sex relationships. What does it mean for gay Christians to live faithful to God while struggling with the challenge of their homosexuality? What is God's will for believers who experience same-sex desires? Those who choose celibacy are often left to deal with loneliness and the hunger for relationships. How can gay Christians experience God's favor and blessing in the midst of a struggle that for many brings a crippling sense of shame and guilt?

Weaving together reflections from his own life and the lives of other Christians, such as Henri Nouwen and Gerard Manley Hopkins, Hill offers a fresh perspective on these questions. He advocates neither unqualified "healing" for those who struggle, nor their accommodation to temptation, but rather faithfulness in the midst of brokenness. "I hope this book may encourage other homosexual Christians to take the risky step of opening up their lives to others in the body of Christ," Hill writes. "In so doing, they may find, as I have, by grace, that being known is spiritually healthier than remaining behind closed doors, that the light is better than the darkness."

A Voice That Needs To Be Heard
By Nicholas Nowalk
This weekend I had the chance to read Wesley Hill's new book, Washed and Waiting: Reflections on Christian Faithfulness and Homosexuality. Wesley is an old acquaintance of mine from grad school days, and a gifted writer and brilliant thinker (he is currently doing his Ph.D in New Testament at Durham in the UK). Previously Wesley had penned a brief, powerful essay exploring his own personal experience of exclusive same-sex desires, reflecting in it on his own anguished struggle of learning to relate his sexuality to the Christian gospel in a meaningful and consistent way.

In my view, neither the world nor the church has done a good job in recent decades in thinking through the complicated issue of homosexuality, or in responding both graciously and truthfully to those who identify as gay or lesbian. This sad state of affairs makes Wesley's book all the more crucial and poignant. Here I provide a basic overview of the book (160pp), but above all else I hope that many of you will make it a point to pick up a copy of it and work through it yourselves. Whether you find yourself agreeing or disagreeing with Wesley's own settled perspective, I think it unlikely you can remain unmoved as the author recounts his own story in often gut-wrenching detail, and you will certainly come to respect his authenticity and ruthless honesty throughout.

Washed and Waiting takes its title and cue from two biblical passages. I Corinthians 6:9-11 refers to the "washed" spiritual status of Christians, while Romans 8:23-25 reminds us that we are "waiting" and groaning for the future consummation of our redemption. This is the famous "already/not yet" schema (as dry academics like to put it) that pervades the New Testament, and Wesley rightly sees that it is essential to narrating one's own life well as a Christian. If only one side or the other of the contrast is taken up and accepted, either insanity or moral compromise will result. Within these two distinctly Christian images, Wesley has slowly learned to recognize the presence of Christ in his life through-not in spite of-his faltering yet faithful struggles with homosexuality.

As one who has experienced his homosexual orientation pre-consciously (it wasn't chosen), exclusively (he has never felt sexual attraction to women), and unremittingly (he has never experienced "healing" or transformation of his sexuality), Wesley is nonetheless forthright that his homosexuality is not the most defining characteristic of his life. He writes in the introduction:

"I've taken care always to make `gay' or `homosexual' the adjective, and never the noun, in a longer phrase, such as `gay Christian' or `homosexual person.' In this way, I hope to send a subtle linguistic signal that being gay isn't the most important thing about my or any other gay person's identity. I am a Christian before I am anything else. My homosexuality is a part of my makeup, a facet of my personality. One day, I believe, whether in this life or in the resurrection, it will fade away. But my identity as a Christian-someone incorporated into Christ's body by his Spirit-will remain." (p. 22)

Wesley unapologetically makes clear from the beginning that he is convinced-as difficult and as costly as the conviction is for him on a personal level-that the only legitimate Christian response to homosexual desires is to remain celibate. Engaging in same-sex romantic relationships is out of bounds in the kingdom of God-as, of course, are quite a few other things. In this he will not be popular with many, though I think his voice needs to be heard in a culture that is increasingly allowing only one side of an important conversation to be heard.

After a lengthy, captivating introduction in which he shares his own biographical experience of being a gay Christian, Wesley moves on in chapter 1 ("A Story-Shaped Life") to give a brief defense of why he remains convinced that as a Christian he must say no to his sexual desires. To back up his own endorsement in this chapter, I also would highly recommend that any thoughtful Christians who are interested in exploring this issue further read Richard Hay's chapter on homosexuality in his magnificent book, The Moral Vision of the New Testament: Community, Cross, New Creation. Also, I found especially insightful Wesley's dawning realization that it is within the story of the gospel-creation, fall, redemption, consummation-that his own experience with homosexuality makes the most sense in the most all-encompassing way: the shame and the joy, the ugly and the beautiful, the depression and the anticipation fit within the story of the cross and resurrection.

In chapter 2 ("The End of Lonlieness"), Wesley relentlessly opens up about the darkest layers of his life as a celibate gay Christian-namely, his longing for relationships of mutual desire and his fear that he will never know or be known in the way that his entire being aches for. In my own quite limited experience of knowing homosexual Christians with some level of intimacy, I have found Wesley's interpretation of his own experience to be the norm. At the same time, this perpetual feeling of profound loneliness is where I feel most "outside" my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who share this burden. So I am thankful for Wesley in humbly allowing me to gain a glimpse of what such a sacrifice has entailed (and continues to entail) for him in taking up his cross to follow Jesus as Lord. His ruminations in this chapter on God's design for the church-the community of believers who allow their lives to be shaped by the gospel-is powerful stuff. God's presence is meant to be mediated to us mainly through other followers of Jesus whom He likewise indwells through His Spirit. We need each other. What a glorious vision. What a heartbreaking tragedy that so much of the contempoary church is light years away from this calling, lost in games and trivality and obsession with self. Lord, have mercy on us.

Chapter 3 ("The Divine Accolade") focuses on Wesley's life-long suspicion that he is shamefully and utterly displeasing to God on account of his sexual orientation and desires. While this still clearly remains a daily battle for Wesley, he lets the audience in on his hope: that in Jesus, sinners can become loved and beautiful before God. Indeed, one day we will receive praise from God Himself when the Lord-in Augustine's wondrous phrase-crowns His own gifts of grace in our lives, glorifying both Himself and us in the process. Relying on C. S. Lewis' classic essay "The Weight of Glory", Wesley points to the Christian hope of one day entering fully into a relationship-both with God in Christ and with other redeemed sinners-of desiring and being desired without shame or guilt, of giving and receiving without hesitation or reserve. We will be "a real ingredient in the divine happiness." In light of this tremendous weight of glory and satisfaction which is coming, our present sufferings are not worthy to be compared. Yet at the same time, in light of this still-outstanding promise which often appears to us as a faint specter on the horizon, we groan as we wait for it. By faith.

Finally, I should mention that in several "interludes" Wesley includes helpful and touching accounts of two well-known gay Christians who also, like the author, came to the painful conclusion that God's purposes for their lives included celibacy: Henri Nouwen and Gerard Manley Hopkins. Yet being dead, they still speak. As does Wesley Hill, and I hope you will take the time to listen to his story.

Hopeful and Practical
By Andrew
As someone who has experienced same-sex attraction for as long as I can remember, Washed and Waiting is the single most helpful and hopeful book I've read on the subject. Most of the Christian books on homosexuality I had read prior to this one focused on psychotherapy and orientation reversal. Because of this, I felt that the goal for me was to experience a change in my attractions. And when that never happened, the disappointment was crushing.

Wesley Hill is less interested in counseling people on how to achieve an orientation change (which is never actually promised in Scripture, although God often does surprising things), and more interested in learning to pursue holiness "in the midst of weakness" (2 Cor. 12:9).

Reading this book marked a turning point in my journey where I learned to accept the fact that I was indeed broken (as we all are in different ways, gay or straight), and began pursuing a vocation of celibacy. Hill shows that celibacy does not have to be some sort of death sentence, but when pursued in the power of the Holy Spirit, can be seen as a sacrificial yet lifegiving practice. As children of God, we're all washed in the blood of Christ and groaning and waiting along with all of creation for the consummation in the new heavens and earth.

If you're interested in reading more of Dr. Hill's writings, I would recommend visiting www.spiritualfriendship.org.

Even if you've never struggled with homosexuality, please read this book--clergy, lay people, everyone. We are silently sitting in your pews and we need your love and help.

Application More Than Exposition
By Glen Davis
Most Christian books on homosexuality spend their time explaining what the Bible teaches but this book focuses more on how to obey what the Bible teaches. The author, a Christian who experiences homosexual temptation, takes for granted that the Bible forbids same-sex romantic intimacy, and then then asks the question, "So what do I do with that?" It is application more than exposition.

The title of this short book comes from two verses: 1 Corinthians 6:11 tells us that we have been washed clean of our sin and Romans 8:25 tells us that we are awaiting the completion of our redemption. Hence, we are washed and waiting. We are free from sin on one level but not yet fully free. Since this is true of all sin, I found the author's answers helpful even though I do not experience same-sex attraction. I have areas of my life where my desires and my devotion to God pull me in opposite directions, and so I empathized with his struggle and learned from it. The section toward the end on loneliness and community was particularly powerful.

In addition this book helped me empathize better with my brothers and sisters in Christ who experience same-sex attraction.

Highly recommended. It is worth reading whatever temptations you face.

Such a great story of hope!
By Jill H.
Stephanie Fast shares her story of being abandoned as a child, being found, and eventually being taken in under the wings of a family. She was brought into this world as part Korean and American, which wasn't accepted in the Korean culture her mother was a part of. She was called a terrible name, which meant something horrible. When her mom took her somewhere so she could travel to be with another family member, a series of devastating events happen while she is lost. She ends up in a place that others probably sometimes die at. She continues to tell her story of how she suffered even after life got better for her later.

This is an amazing story of survival, hope, and the start of a healing process I believe Stephanie went through. I liked how she shared this not just as her story but also in a way that tells how her story is so much like the stories of others who went through (and some are currently going through) the same type of thing that she went though as a orphan. I know that no two stories about surviving as an orphan are the same, but I learned from reading this book that they often go through some of the same life experiences and feel some type of emotional pain and have emotional scars later in life. The open letter from Stephanie at the end gave me some anticipation about hopefully reading her next book about how she lived after she survived the devastation she endured.

I believe this will be a great book for people that are currently orphans to read, to give them some hope. I also believe it will be a good book for people to read who are thinking about, are in the process of, and who have already adopted a child.

Prepare to be moved
By Ivy Dawn
Imagine. Imagine that everyone around you treats you differently from others. Imagine that they call you "tougee" and even though you don't understand what the word means, you know how it makes you feel. Imagine that you are abandoned by your family, left on a train...alone. Imagine that you have to make your way in the world and that nobody will help you. Imagine that you have to survive harsh winters, dig up, catch or steal food and make clothes out of straw for warmth. Now imagine that at the start of your journey you are only four years old.

In her new book She is Mine, author Stephanie Fast takes her readers on an emotional roller coaster as she describes in horrifying detail the trying ordeal she endured as a young girl struggling to survive in South Korea following the Korean War. The daughter of an American soldier and an unwed Korean mother, this nameless child is unwanted and unwelcomed not just by her family, but by everyone she meets.

As you read this account, you will not help but become emotionally involved in the story, turning page after page, praying for a good outcome, for someone to take notice. As a parent your heart will ache for this child, for the physical and emotional trauma she suffers and the innocence that is lost. You will shed tears of sorrow as you are reminded of the tender young age of the one suffering. You will want to hold onto your own children tightly and vow again to shield them from all the darkness of this world. As a human being you will be enraged at the countless abuses she endures by total strangers simply because she was born of the wrong parents. Through it all, your soul will give thanks as you see the hand of Providence in the rare kindnesses shown.

In many ways, this book would be at home on a shelf in the "Horror" section of a book store because it is truly a horror story. It is also a story of survival, of living, when it seems impossible. Perhaps, the most compelling (and the most horrifying thing) about it is that it is a true story. It really happened. It still happens today. Ms. Fast writes "At this moment, there are an estimated 143 million orphans throughout the world who have been abandoned or abused. All are crying out or a caring person to deliver them from the hands of their oppressors."

If you are not prepared to be moved... if you are not prepared to be shaken to the core with abundant emotion, do not read this book. However, if you are willing to open your mind to the plight of millions of children, then pick up this book. Sit down, open it, read it, weep, mourn and prepare to be changed as your mind is made aware not just of tragedy but also of hope that exists all around you..

A life-changing story that you must read
By Melanie
I read this entire book in one night because I simply could not put it down. Just an incredible story on so many levels. I don't think I could survive if left outside for a week, let alone as a young helpless child left alone to survive for years. God's hand is so apparent throughout this story, and I was greatly moved and greatly encouraged by Stephanie's transparency. May God bless this book and give us all a heart to reach out and help the helpless around the world.

“(This book) does a thorough job of breaking down how someone goes about learning the basics of the ukulele. Fun cover too!”

-Jim Beloff, author of many ukulele books, including “The Daily Ukulele”

“I enjoy the lessons. The book and online videos are great for a novice.”

    -Greg M.

“I’ve only been trying to playing ukulele for about a month, can play most instruments by ear, mouth organ violin and piano but only the melodies, hopeless with chords and found the guitar most difficult with chords due to short fat digits. Bought a beginners book on the uke but found that hard to follow and most of the people on Youtube talk too much and too fast and don’t talk you through the procedures.

You on the other hand are easy to follow and with your lessons you can actually hear the chords sounding the same as the songs. Thank you very much and glad that you are ready to help us learners."

    About the Author
Jenny Peters is one part of the sister duo responsible for 21 Songs in 6 Days. She stumbled upon the ukulele after finding 45 of them in one of her elementary school classrooms. Convinced she could turn her find into more than a whole lot of noise, she designed a program to teach all of her students to play successfully with only 30 minutes of class time a week. No one was more grateful than the teacher in the next classroom. A former private piano teacher in Chicago with a Masters in Piano Performance from the University of Illinois, Jenny now lives in Highland Park. Married with three kids, she shares her home with three cats and more musical instruments than she would care to name. Rebecca Bogart is the second half of the sister writing team. An acclaimed classical pianist, performer and teacher, Rebecca has been passionate about the piano and music her entire life. She has played for audiences in Italy, taught master classes at Harvard and won more than a few piano competitions. She made her solo debut at Carnegie Hall in early 2014. Old Dogs, New Tricks
    By Phillip Strong
I'm 80 years in April and wondering just why, at my age I'm attempting to play a uke? It is one of those things to do that
came out of my bucket list to do before it's too late! What with stiff fingers with arthritis and fat fingers, I
really thought I would never last through the beginning stages. However, I found that with an ounce of tenacity
and looking forward to playing something I could sing with, I opened your uke book and began. I was delighted
to my satisfaction to learn chords on an immediate bases and was able to sing a simple tune before my fingers
gave in for the first lesson! This is "amazing" as you kids say, and it truly is. I like adding one thing at a time
and using a beginners book that is easy to read with a warm, light conversational style.

Makes Learning the ukulele easy and fun
    By James A. Vahle
Our friend Jenny Peters told my wife, Carla, that she was writing a book on how to play the ukulele. She added that she was looking for people who liked music, but did not have a musical background who would test her approach.

Knowing that my formal music training ended in the first grade, that I had made limited attempts, using self-help books, to learn to play the piano and guitar, both ending in frustration, Carla said something like "I have just the musical dumbbell for you."

I like to sing. I have a very rudimentary ability to read music and I would really like to play an instrument, but I was not going to make a long term investment in expensive lessons that tie me to a regular schedule.

    I love this program.

The videos and accompanying sound tracks are much more understandable than simply reading text-you get that too-and they give me a standard to compare myself to. When Jenny said her grade school students learned with only one lesson a week, and most didn't have ukuleles at home to practice on, I was hooked.

The instructions are understandable to beginners with little or no musical background. My past attempts to learn an instrument required tons of wasted time looking up terminology that wasn't familiar to me.

They are progressive, going from easy songs to harder ones, and you can advance at your own pace.

The approach is comprehensive, even giving you information on how to buy a ukulele. I bought mine online and bought some accessories at a local music store. In both cases I was comfortable that I knew what I was doing. I have an engineering and financial background, so you can imagine my normal approach to making purchases.

    Did I mention it's affordable?

And it works! My grandkids are impressed.

    E-mail Link Tedious
    By MissToast
I hate to be the dissenting voice but this did not work for me at all. This is partially my fault, as I didn't review the book description carefully enough and as a result I didn't realize that MOST of the useful content would come via daily e-mails. I found this process tedious and also then it made it impossible to work ahead if I had a chunk of time. I spend enough time checking e-mail, I don't want to have to check my e-mail to get my lesson or review an old one. This is supposed to be fun. I think there are much better ways to do this. Also, the placement of the camera so far away from the players made it difficult to see the fretwork/strumming. So yes, it is absolutely my fault for not reviewing the information closely enough but for those considering a purchase, if you travel a lot, don't want to have to check your e-mail everyday for the next lesson or to review one you already completed, then keep that in mind when making your selection.
